Awarded 93 points by Tim Atkin MW 91 points by James Suckling and Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate and a Gold Medal at the Sakura Japan Women’s Wine Awards this is clearly an exceptional example of Carmenère.

Viu Manent pick the grapes for this wine by hand from the vines at the foot of the Loma Blanca hill in their El Olivar Vineyard near the town of Peralillo. Matured in French oak for 14 months it shows exactly why this should be Chile’s star grape variety. The granite soils give the Loma Blanca Single Vineyard Carmenère power and freshness. It displays red cherry strawberry caramelised spices tobacco forest floor wildflowers black pepper and refined tannins. But what we love most about it is its juicy charm which makes it hard to put the glass down. We think this would be a fine choice to partner comfort food in the colder months.

“Viu Manent makes excellent wines across the board” according to the respected American wine critic James Suckling. Founded in 1935 the winery is still owned and run by the Viu family. Their ancestors came to Chile from Catalonia and today their extensive vineyards spread across 254 hectares of the Colchagua Valley which can be visited on antique horse-drawn carriage tours. In fact Decanter Magazine ranks Viu Manent in the Top 10 wineries to visit for foodies presumably in no small part because of their stunningly food-friendly wines.
