No need for clues or guessing, it was Professor Black in the dining room with the red wine bottle.

Warwick Estate’s vegan-friendly Professor Black Pitch Black 2018 pays homage to South Africa’s winemaking history. In the 1970s, the country was famed for its Cabernet and Cinsault blends, balancing the power of the former with the finesse of the latter. That classic blend has largely been forgotten today, as more inspiration is taken from Bordeaux, Burgundy, the Rhône Valley and further afield. But it’s great to return to that Golden Age of winemaking.

When people ask us who we’d invite to our dream dinner party, we always say, “Professor Black!” We have no idea who Professor Black was, we’re talking about the spending an evening in the company of this exceptional red. Pitch Black is a blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Despite the name, this is not quite the inky brew you might expect. It’s a silky and caressing red with notes of spiced plum crumble, cherry compote, crème de cassis, wild strawberries, dark chocolate, dried herbs, spiced meat, tobacco and clove. 2018 was only the second vintage of Professor Black Pitch Black and we look forward to many more.

Located in South Africa’s second-oldest wine region on land that has a farming history stretching back to 1771, Warwick Estate is one of the country’s most loved producers. You’ll find them nestled in the foothills of the iconic Simonsberg Mountain, making world-class wines that offer serious value for money. Stan and Norma Ratcliffe purchased the estate in 1964, and Norma became such a legend on South Africa’s wine scene that she was awarded the 1659 Medal of Honour. Although this accolade is not a household name in the UK, it’s worth noting that Nelson Mandela was one of the previous winners.
