It bursts from the glass with green apples crunchy pears elderflower quince juicy peach watermelon grapefruit gooseberry garden herbs sunbeams and joy. Confusingly the picturesque town of Bernkastel-Kues has two wineries called Dr. H. Thanisch because Napoleonic inheritance laws caused estates to be split between family members. This one is Erben Müller-Burggraef and is run by the Bremen-born vintner Maximilian F. W. Ferger. The name comes from Dr. Hugo Thanisch who apparently cured the Elector Boemund of Trier from a mystery illness with a glass of golden wine. The legendary vineyard that wine came from was renamed Bernkasteler Doctor in his honour and is now considered one of Germany’s finest plots.
