When this innovative Rye Whiskey was released the Robb Report crowned it the “Best of the Best” saying that “WhistlePig produced a bottle that soared past the world’s greatest single malts rums and bourbons to become [their] spirit of the year.”

The closest most American whiskey gets to a wine cask is when the finished bottle is exported to Europe. This makes Whistlepig’s 12 Year Old quite unique. The whiskey is sourced from the MGP Distillery in Indiana and then travels to Vermont where it’s finished in Old World wine casks in a mixture of 63% Madeira 30% Sauternes and 7% Port. The result is a wonderful mellowing of a classic spicy rye whiskey. There’s still all the peppercorn caramel allspice aniseed toffee and oak you’d expect but then there’s more layered on top. The Madeira casks impart raisin date and marmalade notes Sauternes adds honey and dried apricot and the Port creates something reminiscent of cherry liqueur chocolates and earthy raspberries. WhistlePig have created another must-try for American whiskey fans but also those who prefer their whisky without an ‘e’ need to understand that this bottle can rival almost any 18 Year Old Scotch on the market.

Founder Raj Peter Bahkta sank his last dime on this 500-acre ex-dairy farm in Shoreham. He then shrewdly talked distiller Dave Pickerell – who had spent 15 years at Maker’s Mark – into joining him to pursue the dream of reincarnating farm to bottle American rye whiskey. Many have called this venture pig-headed because rye is notoriously difficult to work with. But anyone who has tasted their outturn knows that this is one of the whiskies to watch.
