Created in the 1870’s, Punt e Mes is a historic Italian aperitif with a rich history and a loyal following. Bitter and sweet in style, Punt e Mes is an example of a vermouth amaro, or “vermouth con bitter,” a style of vermouth that has extra bitterness added. Flavoured with orange and spices, Punt e Mes also contains quinine (also found in tonic water), which contributes the bitter part of its unique flavour. Golden orange in colour with topaz tones, the nose has herbal notes along with vanilla, dried fruit and blossom. The initial taste is one of sweetness, followed by the characteristically bitter taste of the quina and ends on a sweet note. Punt e Mes is delicious served straight with a slice of orange peel but is also perfect as a base for cocktails such as the famous MITO, the Manhattan or the legendary 70′s Punt e Mes.
