Mark and Sophie McGill run this picturesque estate located a stone’s throw away from the Abel Tasman National Park, New Zealand's smallest national park, located at the top of New Zealand’s South Island.

Sophie’s parents, James and Wendy Healy have been in the wine industry for over 40 years, working with the iconic Cloudy Bay and then going on to co-establish Dog Point Vineyard in Marlborough.  Mark’s Dad, Linton, has been a viticulturist for just as long, working throughout New Zealand and then planting a vineyard in the Wairarapa in the early 90s.

They work with sustainably managed farms and planted their own vineyard and orchard in 2019, which they are farming organically. They aren't aiming for a particular style, simply for wines with purity and drinkability that compliment food. Mark says: For us, it's about showcasing the fruit, that's the key ingredient after all and I think that's quite evident in our Chardonnay.

Fruit comes from two vineyards in the Nelson-Tasman region. Both vineyards are situated on rolling hills close to the sea, near to the Kina Peninsula. The vines grow on Moutere clay soils and are 20-25 years old on average.

Fruit is handpicked and quickly undergoes a light whole bunch press to get the best juice. The juice is transferred into a new 3000 litre French Oak Cuve to start fermentation, which occurs naturally after approximately 10 days. The wine completes malolactic fermentation over winter and spring and is followed by some lees work. The wine is unfined and only undergoes a coarse filtration prior to bottling, with just a touch of SO2 to preserve the vibrant fruit.

Expect to find peach, pineapple and lemon zest, and a touch of reduction on the nose. The palate displays a flinty minerality, bright citrus and a gentle nuttiness. It’s beautifully structured with crisp acidity and a rounded, lees-driven texture.
