ATA RANGI MARTINBOROUGH PINOT NOIR 2020
2020 was a typical vintage for Ata Rangi. Despite a dry period between December and mid-March, the quality of the fruit was exceptional. Thanks to the dry conditions, when rainfall occurred during harvest, berries were free from fungal infection, without any incidence of botrytis or berry splitting. Harvest took place between 5th and 26th March 2020.
Ata Rangi’s estate Pinot Noir is produced from their oldest vines on the Martinborough Terrace, sourced from six small vineyards located within 500 metres of the winery. The 2020 Pinot Noir was 40% whole bunch pressed and 60% destemmed, fermented with indigenous yeasts in tank. After pressing, the wine underwent full malolactic fermentation in oak barrels. It was aged for 11 months in French oak barrels, of which 35% was new. The wine was then blended and aged for a further eight months prior to bottling. The result is complex, elegant and classically Ata Rangi.
98 points – James Suckling, November 2022
ATA RANGI `MCCRONE VINYARD` PINOT NOIR 2020
McCrone Vineyard is very close to the Home Block but the soils are remarkably different. While the Martinborough Terrace is predominantly alluvial gravel, there is a compact seam of clay which threads its way across a section of the terrace, fanning out over the gravels and creating a cooling effect on the roots in the soil. The McCrone site catches this seam and delivers a distinctly different fruit profile than that of the Ata Rangi Pinot Noir.
The fruit was 40% whole bunch pressed with the remainder destemmed. Fermentation took place with indigenous yeasts and took up to 23 days. After pressing, complete malolactic fermentation took place in oak. The wine then spent 11 months in French oak (35% new) and was then blended before a further 8 months of ageing prior to bottling.
ATA RANGI `KOTINGA VINYARD` PINOT NOIR 2020
This is the inaugural release of the Kotinga Pinot Noir. The vineyard was established in 2001 on the edge of the Martinborough Terrace, it is Ata Rangi's most gravelly, free draining site. The site contains entirely Dijon clones 115, 667 and 777.
40% of the wine was whole bunch pressed with the remainder destemmed. Fermentation took place using indigenous yeasts and took a total of 23 days. After pressing, the wine completed full malolactic fermentation in oak. This was then followed by 11 months ageing in a 2,280 litre French oak foudre to retain the bright, crunchy qualities of Dijon clones grown on gravel.
ATA RANGI `MASTERS VINYARD` PINOT NOIR 2020
The 'Masters' vineyard is owned and farmed by Ata Rangi winemaker Helen Masters and her family. This vineyard was established in 2002, 4km south of Martinborough Terrace. Here, the alluvial gravels are mixed with clay which acts to retain moisture keeping the soils cooler than the more gravel dominant sites around Martinborough village. As the most southerly of the Ata Rangi sites, it is generally harvested around one to two weeks later than the other vineyards.
70% of the fruit was whole bunch pressed, with the remainder destemmed. This was followed by fermentation using indigenous yeasts. The wine remained in tank for a total of 23 days when after pressing, it was transferred to complete malolactic fermentation in oak. The wine spent a total of 11 months in French oak (30% new), it was then blended and aged for a further 8 months prior to bottling.
