Hemel-en-Aarde is Afrikaans for ‘heaven and earth’, which describes not only the beauty of the location, but also the lengths we’ll go to secure wines from this region of South Africa.

Ataraxia sits in what looks like a converted church beneath the lofty peak of the Babilonstoringberge mountain peak. The terroir is breathtakingly spectacular and the wines that Malawi-born Kevin Grant makes there are equally striking.

Ataraxia Chardonnay 2021 clearly impressed the Master of Wine Tim Atkin judging by the following score and review:

92 points, “Slightly richer and more oxidatively handled than usual, with some subtle skin phenolics, the 2021 Chardonnay has good structure, very well-handled oak, flavours of pear, honey and orange peel and a patina of vanilla and cinnamon spices.”

This unapologetically wooded white wine has a palpable maritime influence. Crafted using uncomplicated techniques and minimal intervention, it sings of its homeland with a briny salinity and stylish minerality. White flowers, vanilla cream, blossom honey, peach sorbet, poached pear, sun ripened tropical fruit and toasty oak all come together in an unforgettable experience.

Ataraxia is a Greek word meaning ‘a serene state of mind, free from worry and preoccupation’, which is the perfect way to enjoy their wines. Located a short distance from the coastal village of Hermanus, they are just one of the many prodigious talents in this area, which is also home to Hamilton Russell, Restless River and Boekenhoutskloof’s Cap Maritime. Their 50 hectares of vineyards are the epitome of the emotional tranquillity their name suggests.
