Balvenie’s A Rare Discovery from Distant Shores is a 27-year-old whisky that highlights innovation, creativity and friendship. This exceptional and unique whisky is a result due to a collaboration between Malt master, David C Stewart of Balvenie, and John Barrett of Bristol Spirits. Barrett had the foresight to purchase the remaining stocks from a closing Caroni rum distillery in 2003 and, after greatly impressing Stewart with some samples, it was agreed that William Grant would purchase these casks of Caroni in 2009. In 2014, the decision was made to use the casks for finishing a 20-year-old Balvenie before maturing for a further 7 years. The final whisky combines the heavier, oily and treacly characteristics of the Caroni rum with the signature Balvenie honeyed fruits.

The rich and indulgent nose sings with notes of muscovado sugar and manuka honey unfurling with hints of light fruit, green banana and gentle spice. The first beautifully smooth sip unveils a velvety vanilla viscosity with a burst of sweetness evolving into treacle toffee, aged leather and deep oak tannin. A wonderfully mouth coating oiliness arises out of the long lingering sweet finish with the realisation that the drinker has tasted something truly special.

This unique whisky is sure to be a favourite of collectors and those looking to try something exceptional with a twist, who value strong heritage, high quality and innovation and are prepared to pay more for it, so grab one of these remarkable and limited bottles and be part of the Balvenie history.

Balvenie means “village of luck”; anybody buying this classic Speyside will share in that good fortune. But the quality is not down to luck, it comes from hard graft and attention to detail. Thanks to a unique combination of natural alchemy and centuries-old craftsmanship Balvenie remains one of the most independent and prestigious distilleries in all of Scotland. Situated in the heart of the Speyside region Balvenie unusually grows a proportion of its own barley and still employs a traditional malting floor – the last of its kind in the Scottish Highlands. A resident coppersmith maintains the distinctively shaped stills and a skilled team of coopers ensure each barrel is kept in perfect condition. It’s true you make your own luck.
