92 points “I can’t begin to tell you how many times this modestly priced over achiever has come up in big tastings I conduct each year. It’s a really consistent value for money red from the Barossa that always seems to deliver a little more than the price. This is stacked with bright red fruits that emerge from the Grenache component while it is underpinned by deeper savoury plum flavours of the shiraz. A rich dark chocolate almost biscuit-like base and a touch of spice provide palate substance. The oak mix of largely used French and American is gently layered into the pool of fruit adding further to an already engaging combination. Excellent wine.” – Ray Jordan The Wine Pilot

Ben Glaetzer’s take on the traditional Barossa Valley blend of Shiraz and Grenache has a wonderfully modern feel. Wallace always proves popular around Burns Night not just because of the Scottish name (a nod to Ben’s mum’s ancestors from Cupar in Fife) and the thistles in Celtic knot pattern on the label but because this peppery and juicy red also pairs wonderfully with haggis not to mention steak stews and roasts.

Wallace by Ben Glaetzer 2019 is a blend of 78% Shiraz and 22% Grenache from old vines in the Ebenezer sub-region at the north of the Barossa Valley. The Shiraz is matured in old oak for 16 months while the Grenache sees no oak at all to keep all that liveliness and freshness. These components are then blended to create a red that’s bursting with red berry fruit tangy redcurrant juicy blackberry plum crumble raspberry liqueur liquorice star anise cedar tar vanilla and bittersweet dark chocolate. A great wine to have in for those cold nights.

The Glaetzers settled in the Barossa Valley in 1888 so know a thing or two about the area. They’ve carved their niche in the sub-region of Ebenezer where – in their five star-rated winery (James Halliday’s Wine Companion) – they make what Matthew Jukes has called: “Silky textural and layered… extremely serious wines.”
