93 points “Patina comes from a 1.6-hectare parcel planted on schist soils in 1996. Partially fermented on skins it has good grip taut acidity and layers of pear green apple and beeswax. Concrete eggs add some focus to the vanilla oak spice.” – Tim Atkin MW

Any new wine from the Boekenhoutskloof stable is exciting especially since Gottfried Mocke was named by Tim Atkin MW as his winemaker of the year in 2021.

Patina comes from the new plantings on their Swartland property Goldmine Farm located between Riebeek-Kasteel and Malmesbury and neighbouring Mullineux’s Roundstone Farm. This area is producing some of the finest fruit in all of South Africa. The smaller size also means that Boekenhoutskloof can get back to basics micro-vinifying plots stomping grapes by foot and playing with different fermentation techniques. In 2019 the vines finally came of age and we’re now starting to see a few experimental releases…

Nothing can tarnish the golden experience of this wine. Patina Chenin Blanc is a labour of love. One third was fermented spontaneously in concrete eggs one third was bunch pressed and matured in a combination of French oak and concrete eggs for 12 months and the remaining third was pressed off the skins halfway through the fermentation and then transferred to concrete eggs. They must have a lot of concrete eggs! The result is layered with citrus apricot bruised apple crunchy pear quince kumquat orange blossom acacia honey candlewax vanilla saffron and allspice. Rich and ripe but with incredible freshness this is our new favourite Chenin Blanc. Boekenhoutskloof has struck gold.
