94 points “A tender nose shows of a sense of fresh sweet cream and crushed berry – unusually with a hint of blueberry followed by Red Delicious apple and a beautifully lifted and aromatic note of tangerine. The palate is sinuous and elegant there is wonderful depth of fruit and that lovely signature creaminess of Bollinger expressed in superfine foam. There is subtle length that only emphasises the depth of flavour. Very elegant very expressive as vivid energetic and vibrant as the previous releases under this series. Lovely.” – Anne Krebiehl MW Falstaff
92-94 points “Very beautiful and personal. The scent has features of lead pencil juniper and freshly lacquered boat together with more classic coffee notes rose petals apricot and peach. The taste is vivid and multifaceted with a lively precision lighter fruit aromas than you normally find in Bollinger’s wines. Even cassis is one of the more unexpected aromas in this finely tuned complex symphony. Very impressive and exciting Champagne that really makes me want to taste more…” – Richard Juhlin The Champagne Club
Bollinger PN is the first line added to the famous Champagne house’s range in over a decade. Not only does it look like the little black dress of the wine world but it also tastes fabulous.
Pinot Noir is the foundation stone on which Bollinger’s style is built. The new PN cuvée is a celebration of this. Each year’s new release will feature a different base year. The first two releases VZ15 and VZ16 sold out almost immediately. And we’re sure that the third TX17 will follow suit.
TX17 comes mainly from Tauxières hence the ‘TX’ in the name although there are also components from Avenay and Verzenay. Tauxières is a relatively large village in the Montagne de Reims subregion. In addition to Bollinger plots Moët & Chandon Mumm Philipponnat and Veuve Clicquot all own vines in this village. Alongside Mareuil-sur-Ay it is the highest rated Premier Cru village at 99% only just missing out on that illusive Grand Cru status. Despite the undisputable quality it’s incredibly rare to find a Champagne dominated by grapes from the vineyards of Tauxières. So this is one for the fine wine geeks out there.
The wine is constructed on a base from the 2017 vintage – a tricky year but one in which Bollinger’s Tauxières plots shone – with the oldest reserve wine component coming from 2006 (some of which was aged in magnums for almost eleven years). 50% fermented in oak and matured for twice as long as a Non-Vintage requires by law Bollinger have really pushed the boat out with this one.
Tauxières’ terroir creates wines with a delicate elegance. So you can expect notes of fresh apricot and peach exotic fruits dried flowers tobacco mocha acacia honey drizzled on baguette citrus zest walnut baklava gingerbread spices and a pinch of sea salt. But as the critics above have noted it’s the red fruit notes that make it so intriguing. The hint of crème de cassis makes us think wistfully of a Kir Royale although we would never do that to this sensational Champagne. In short this Blanc de Noirs is so good that it looks like each year’s new release will be one of the highlights of the Champagne calendar.
