Champagne Bollinger was founded in 1829 by Jacques Bollinger and soon earned a reputation for quality. Under subsequent generations its reputation has gone from strength to strength and today it is one of the most prestigious of all Champagne brands. Stylistically Bollinger is renowned for its rich and savoury style of wines dominated by Pinot Noir and subject to oak fermentation and extensive lees maturation. Bollinger’s R.D 2002 marks 50 years of this ground-breaking wine which was born from Madame Bollinger’s inspired idea which she turned into reality with the 1952 vintage. Representing a blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay drawn from 23 crus (71% Grands Crus and 29% Premier Crus) this unique Champagne was aged for more than a decade on yeast before being disgorged and released. Stylistically R.D is a fresh structured and complex expression which boasts atypical texture and subtle secondary notes in its flavour profile. Restrained and elegant on the nose suggestions of lemon grapefruit mineral and floral notes come to the fore. Very dry and crisp in the mouth this wine combines a remarkable power depth and focus ahead of finishing extraordinarily long. Whilst drinking well now this will undoubtedly improve and evolve beautifully over the next 15 years and beyond. A must-try for lovers of full-flavoured masculine Champagne.
