Port Charlotte PAC: 01 2011 is a cask experiment in Bruichladdich’s heavily peated Single Malt. Peated to 40ppm and distilled in 2011 this wonderful 8-year-old Scotch was matured for a minimum of six years in ex-American oak casks before being finished in red wine casks from Pauillac in Bordeaux. The distillery is keeping the origin of the French wine barrels secret but we all know where the ones came from for Port Charlotte MRC: 01 2010 so the provenance is definitely top notch. Barbeque smoke festive spices chocolate toffee coconut macaroons citrus Christmas cake sea spray charred meat tar and smoked peppercorns all come together in this fireside dram. It’s a very complex dram as you would expect from one of the titans of the alcoholic beverage world.
Port Charlotte was founded in 1829. Although the name changed to Lochindaal whisky production continued for a full century until it was finally closed in 1929. With only a couple of warehouses left standing and remaining stocks becoming more elusive than unicorns it has quickly become the stuff of Islay legends. However following notes made by the brewing and distilling historian Alfred Barnard Bruichladdich has lovingly resurrected the brand and the spirit of the early pioneers who lived in the village of Port Charlotte.
