“Best Islay Single Malt No Age Statement” – World Whiskies Awards 2020

Toiteach A Dhà – pronounced ‘Toch-ach ah-ghaa’ (it’s easier after a dram) – means ‘smoky two’ in Gaelic. This award-winning Scotch is the sequel to the much-loved Toiteach made with the same peated malted barley but with significantly more sweet Oloroso Sherry influence.

It opens with a smoke and brine combo that reminds us of fishing villages in winter and Arbroath Smokies. After that it evolves into summer fruit Tunnock’s Caramel Christmas spices Jaffa Cakes Double Decker black pepper ancho chilli raisins dates roasted nuts chocolate and leathery Sherry. The combination of Sherry and peat can be a challenging one but here they marry like soulmates creating one of the ultimate winter sippers.

You’ll find this legendary malt maker down a misty single-track road on the east side of Islay. Pronounced ‘boona-havn’ it’s the most northerly of the island’s distilleries and it likes to do things a little differently. Rather than chasing ever peatier and smokier styles like its neighbours Bunnahabhain creates unpeated or lightly peated silky smooth and creamily drinkable drams.
