Every year since 2001 Diageo has unveiled its Special Releases – a limited-edition series of highly collectable and sought-after Scotch whiskies exploring the breadth and depth of their portfolio. What makes them so exciting is Diageo’s unparalleled ability to cherry-pick anything from a lost barrel produced at a ‘ghost’ distillery to an experimental expression from a world-renowned brand. These are one-of-a-kind bottlings that are not to be missed…

Curated by Diageo’s Master Blender Craig Wilson the 2021 Special Releases collection is entitled ‘Legends Untold’. These cask-strength whiskies take inspiration from the mysterious mythological creatures said to inhabit the lands around the distilleries chosen. Each bottle carries a QR code providing the owner access to a “multi-sensory experience” of legends and tales from the distilleries as told by Scottish actors Siobhan Redmond and Lorne MacFadyen and the digital artist Ken Taylor. Fans of Game of Thrones and the accompanying whiskies will find much to love here.

Cardhu 14 Year Old Special Release 2021 was matured in refill American oak before being finished in red wine casks a bit of a rarity for Diageo. Cardhu is a wonderfully soft and approachable Single Malt and the red wine influence has been deftly executed. Gentle berry fruit and warming cinnamon notes elevate rather than overpower the classic Cardhu character of buttery shortbread peach apple grape pear sweet vanilla oat and raisin cookies honey and the grass and blossom combo of orchards in the spring sunshine. This is a summery dram that will be long gone before that season comes back around so snap it up and tuck it away until 2022.

Helen Cumming began creating whisky in an illicit still near Archiestown in Speyside back in 1811. She would sell bottles to passers-by through her window. Becoming licensed 13 years later this endeavour would become Cardhu – the first distillery to be pioneered by a woman. During its history it has been owned by William Grant (creators of Glenfiddich and Hendrick’s) Johnnie Walker and Sons and now Diageo.
