Monsordo Rosso is Piedmont’s answer to the Super Tuscans. Eschewing the region’s famous Nebbiolo grape this is a modern Bordeaux-inspired blend of organic Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot and Syrah aged in French oak for 16 months. This experimental branch of Ceretto’s operation has been testing unusual varieties since the 1990s with dramatic results. The glamorous bottle designed by Giacomo Bersanetti and Italo Lupi contains an exuberant red bursting with cassis ripe plum vanilla cinnamon and smoke. It makes a great centrepiece to any dinner table and Italian wine is always so food friendly that this makes a superb alternative where you might normally serve a Bordeaux.

Ceretto was established in the 1930s by brothers Bruno and Marcello; this dynamic duo managed to pin down some of the most valuable and historically significant plots in the Barolo in Piedmont. The company is now run by their children Lisa Roberta Alessandro and Federico. Despite being a traditional family business they are incredibly forward thinking. All of the vineyards are either organic or are being converted that way; they follow biodynamic farming methods; currently incorporating four wineries their empire is growing; their winemaker is actually an Aussie called Dave Fletcher who makes incredible Nebbiolo on both sides of the planet; and they also own a three-Michelin-starred restaurant called Piazza Duomo in Alba. They are famed for their elegant wines and modern Piedmont style and have developed a cult following as one of the region’s under-the-radar stars.
