“Harks back to the wonderful vintages of white Fieuzal from the 1980s… A beauty.” This vintage of Château de Fieuzal’s excellent white clearly impressed wine critic James Suckling.
White Bordeaux doesn’t get the attention it deserves in large part due to its rarity. Less than 20% of Château de Fieuzal vineyards - owned by a pair of Irish wine lovers - are dedicated to Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc but its gravelly soils produce complex delicate and exceptional white wines. Their winemaker Stephen Carrier (who receives a little help from Hubert de Bouärd of Château Angélus) notes that these wines are “never exuberant in their early years… I find that our Fieuzal whites age very well. The 2010 2011 and 2012 vintage are currently showing very well.”
2011 was a great year in Bordeaux for this style with Jancis Robinson noting “some real energy and excitement in dry whites.” Now all that promise is emerging; creamy vanilla and gentle chalky spices are appearing through the lean lemon peel grapefruit green apple kiwi spring blossom and sea spray. A perfect partner for lemon sole fish and chips creamy sauces and Japanese dishes.
