91 points, “The 2019 de Fonbel is composed of 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Carmenere. Deep garnet-purple coloured, it sings of chocolate-covered cherries, black raspberries, liquorice, and cardamom with a waft of tilled soil. Medium-bodied, it is elegantly styled and refreshing with soft tannins and a spicy lift on the finish.” - Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, The Wine Independent

90 points, "The 2019 Château de Fonbel has an attractive bouquet of raspberry, briary and light minty scents with just a touch of freshly rolled tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied, quite cohesive and fleshy, delivering tobacco-tinged red fruit, moderate weight and a gentle grip toward the finish, which is lent a little sharpness by the 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink 2023-2033." – Neal Martin, Vinous

Château de Fonbel is situated below Ausone and Moulin St George and is owned by Alain Vauthier, regarded as one of the finest winemakers in the Saint-Émilion. With the perfect terroir for a classic Bordeaux blend and in the hands of an expert winemaker, this expression is an undiscovered gem with elegance, style and good structure.

The succulent and ripe bouquet of raspberry, blackcurrant and cranberry alongside herbal hints and a touch of tobacco lead you into the elegant, medium-bodied palate delivering a velvety richness supported by fresh and harmonious tannins, dark red fruits and notes of spice. Its lingering finish and complexity highlight the quality of the terroir and the producer and ensure that while this may not be a very well-known Chateau, the quality is clear to see. A perfect wine for a dinner of grilled meat, rich potato and mature cheeses.

The relatively unknown and under the radar Château de Fonbel presides over 19 hectares of sandy gravel soils planted with predominantly Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grapes. Owned by the Vauthier family of Château Ausone fame, this vineyard can only continue to shine brighter with such expertise and skill at the helm.
