92 points, “I’ve always loved this cuvée and it’s a terrific value year in, year out. The 2012 Fleur de Boüard is more than noteworthy, it’s a terrific wine to buy a case of for drinking over the coming 15+ years. A blend of 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and the balance Cabernet Sauvignon, it boasts a sexy, voluptuous, medium to full-bodied style as well as loads of black currant and black raspberry fruits, toasted spices, and lead pencil shaving-like nuances. With remarkable purity of fruit, moderate acidity, and sweet tannin, it’s already drinking beautifully (as are most 2012s) and is a hidden gem.” – Jeb Dunnuck

Hubert de Boüard de Laforest is obviously most famous for being the co-owner of Château Angélus in Saint-Émilion. However, the estate he and his family have owned in Lalande-de-Pomerol since 1998 should not be overlooked, especially when rare back vintages like this crop up.

Château La Fleur de Boüard is considered by many a junior version of the legendary Angélus, but with a substantially lower price tag. It is crafted using predominantly Merlot grapes from 25-year-old vines grown on the plateaus of Néac and Pomerol, plus a splash of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc for backbone and aromatics. This big red wine spends 18-24 months in oak and is bottled without fining or filtration, making it vegan friendly – a bit of a rarity in Bordeaux. Expect a modern Claret with silky tannins, rich concentration and a fine texture. Black cherry, blackberry, plum and blueberry fruit mingle with flourishes of cocoa, violets, crème de cassis and smoke; it makes us want to break out some recipes from Larousse Gastronomique and create something slow-cooked and French.

2012 was a tricky vintage, but as Jancis Robinson MW noted that “Merlot-based reds were less adversely affected” and that “Top properties made small quantities of outstanding wines.” With Hubert de Boüard de Laforest at the helm, this is clearly one of those properties. And Château La Fleur de Boüard Lalande-de-Pomerol 2012 is now at its peak and shows just what a skilled winemaker can do in a challenging year.
