“The luxury cuvée the 2011 La Plus de la Fleur de Boüard […] exhibits over-the-top concentration (yields were an amazingly low 20 hectolitres per hectare). An opaque blue/purple colour is followed by aromas of blueberry jam melted chocolate spring flowers graphite and subtle oak. Both elegant and powerful this is a rich textured full-throttle Claret […] A brilliant reference point wine for Lalande-de-Pomerol owner Hubert de Boüard consistently over-achieves in most vintages.” – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Hubert de Boüard de Laforest is obviously most famous for being the co-owner of Château Angélus in Saint-Émilion. However the estate he and his family have owned in Lalande-de-Pomerol since 1998 should not be overlooked especially when rare back vintages like this crop up.
Château La Fleur de Boüard is considered by many a junior version of the legendary Angélus but with a substantially lower price tag. The estates most revered wine is the incredible Le Plus de la Fleur de Boüard. They only made 3 000 bottles of it in the 2011 vintage making it extremely hard to come by.
Le Plus de la Fleur de Boüard is a pure Merlot from old vines with an average age of 60 years. It’s matured entirely in new oak barrels (an expensive undertaking) for 30 months before being bottled without fining or filtration making it vegan friendly (a bit of a rarity in Bordeaux). A big and gutsy red in its prime this should not be missed. Drink now with something lavish and French.
Following the incredible vintages in 2009 and 2010 it was always going to be difficult for 2011 to measure up. However Le Plus de la Fleur de Boüard Lalande-de-Pomerol 2011 is now at its peak and shows just what a skilled winemaker with access to old vines can do in a challenging year.
