100 points “I have had the very good fortune to taste the 2001 d'Yquem perhaps a dozen times since its release and have never been less than absolutely floored by its combination of poise purity precision and layer upon intricate jaw-dropping layer of flavour nuances. It is among a very small clutch of incredible wines that crash through the 100-point ceiling and rocket beyond the stratosphere!” – Wine Advocate
19 points “Sumptuous glorious with richness concentration yet no heaviness and quite enough freshness to see it through for decades.” – Jancis Robinson.
According to Wine Advocate this “uncommonly great vintage” is “a true wine rarity that must be tried to be believed”. This benchmark vintage is one of the all-time greats with Robert Parker going so far as to described it as the “perfect sweet white Bordeaux”. Perfect conditions resulted in a wine that’s brimming with marmalade pineapple apricot jam crème caramel maple syrup chamomile tea heather honey pear tart marzipan lime juice beeswax lemon meringue pie poached yellow plum orange granita and umami notes that will be spectacular with cheese. As ever it’s an opportunity not to miss. Consider pairing with cheese fruit-based desserts crème brûlée pâté or chicken livers; or simply giving it the respect it deserves and serving it alone at the end of a meal in all its magnificence.
As Jancis Robinson says this producer creates the “greatest wine of Sauternes and according to the famous 1855 Classification of the entire Bordeaux region.” But it goes far beyond that; Château d’Yquem is the most famous sweet wine on the planet and arguably the finest. This is one of the few wines that all the critics agree unanimously is a masterpiece in every vintage. Its 110-hectare vineyard is planted with 80% Semillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc and is located on the highest hill in Sauternes where it enjoys the best growing conditions in the whole appellation. Botrytis cinerea also known as noble rot attacks the grapes dehydrating them and concentrating the flavours and the sugar. Winds that blow through the vineyard prevent this rot from becoming destructive and the grapes are rigorously sorted resulting in extremely low yields. It’s said that one vine is required to create just one glass of Château d’Yquem. In its illustrious history it was once owned by the King of England and has therefore always been much-loved on these shores. More recently it was acquired by Louis Vuitton-Moët-Hennessy (LVMH) owners of Dom Pérignon Krug Ruinart Cheval Blanc Ardbeg Glenmorangie Belvedere and Cloudy Bay not to mention a who’s who of fashion cosmetics and jewellery. All of which makes it one of the most stylish wines on Earth.
