Ichiro’s Malt Mizunara Wood Reserve is an incredibly complex pure malt whisky made from a variety of single malts that have been blended and then finished in Japanese Oak casks, known as Mizunara, which imparts a unique flavour profile and character to the liquid. Mizunara is a wood type that is notoriously difficult to work with, which makes it incredibly rare to get some that can create a cask, which means that it becomes very expensive to utilise. All this effort is worth it, however, as it means that the Mizunara Oak can impart flavours unlike other oaks, with rich and decadent notes pouring through the whisky.
The Mizunara casks give the whisky earthy notes of incense, rich sandalwood, and aloe, with a touch of white pepper and fresh citrus peel. On the palate, there is a pleasing ginger note with fragrant wood spices and honey, finishing with dark chocolate and a subtle hint of smoke, all finishing with stone fruits and warming wood spice.
