Mostly known for their iconic Sauvignon Blanc, Cloudy Bay are now exploring the potential of Central Otago’s Pinot Noir. Te Wahi – meaning ‘The Place’ in Maori – is Cloudy Bay’s first wine produced outside of the Marlborough region. Developed in tiny quantities, Te Wahi 2018 marks only the Eighth vintage of this wine and is an outstanding achievement.
Made in a traditional manner that employs as little intervention as possible, this is a youthful but expressive wine that will age very well. The grapes, derived from Northburn and Bannockburn, combine to create something almost Californian in style and richness. A perfumed nose reveals subtle aromas of cherry, red liquorice, cola, plum crumble and wild flowers, whilst the palate is plush-yet-defined and balanced. Initial dark fruit flavours evolve into sour cherry, accompanied by notes of leather, smoke and bittersweet chocolate. Dusty tannins linger on for an elegant but generous finish.
