“Tropicool is not a status it’s a state of mind.” – Jonathan Chauveau-Friggiati

Cointreau has always been about mixing things up combining the old with the new. So for their latest limited-edition bottle they asked The Tropicool Company to create a triptych in honour of the original Margarita. The result is a lush vibrant and dreamy travel-inspired design. With toucans Swiss cheese plant leaves sun-kissed oranges and bold colours it’s a one-way ticket to the tropics. This rare Cointreau bottle is quite simply the summer season’s must-have cocktail accessory.

Following in the footsteps of Vincent Darré Laetitia Casta and Dita von Teese The Tropicool Company have some pretty stylish boots to fill. Founded in 2014 on the island of Sète by Jonathan Chauveau-Friggiati The Tropicool Company is an international art enterprise based in Marseille. For this project they chose a Parisian designer called Florian Viel. He fell in love with the tropical vibes while visiting Chichén Itzá in Mexico which must have helped get him in the mood for a Margarita. He says “I mix a lot of things in my work.” Although he’s talking about colour palettes and shapes it all fits very neatly with the idea of thoughtfully crafting cocktails. In our opinion his three images wrapped around the bottle perfectly capture the joy of that first sip of Margarita.

Contained within the bottle is the Cointreau we all know and love. It’s a unique blend of sweet and bitter orange peels distilled in Angers using very traditional methods to obtain an aromatic and crystalline orange liqueur like the tears of the fruit itself. So perfect are the results that it’s now known all around the globe. Made from 100% natural ingredients it has limitless versatility and no spirit collection should be without a bottle. It always adds a certain je ne sais quoi to the mixing of a Mimosa White Lady Sidecar or the ever-popular Margarita.

Cointreau claim that the original Margarita was invented in 1948 in Acapulco by a wealthy American socialite called Margaret Sames. It’s a nice story but highly debatable. Maybe over a cocktail? Margarita is Spanish for ‘Daisy’ and Daisy cocktails were a style of drink dating back to the Victorian era made by mixing citrus juice with a sweetening syrup or liqueur and a base spirit. So Margaritas are thought to be an agave-based twist on an ancient classic. Also recipes combining lime juice Cointreau Tequila and a salt rim can be traced back to several cocktail books published around the late-1930s. Whatever they truth there’s no denying that Cointreau’s recommended recipe is a cracker…

  • 30ml Cointreau
  • 50ml Tequila Blanco
  • 20ml Fresh lime juice

Make a salt rim by rubbing lime around the glass and dipping the edge in sea salt. Shake the three ingredients vigorously with ice strain into your salt-rimmed glass and garnish with a wheel of lime. They just try not to lose your ‘tropicool’ when you taste the results.

For us Cointreau is the ultimate liqueur for a classic Margarita because it’s a little drier and higher in alcohol than most triple sec making for a better balance in the cocktail.
