Copper Dog is the bottled essence of Speyside. This Blended Malt Scotch Whisky is brimming with fresh apples and pears orange peel and sultanas breakfast cereal with bits of coconut runny honey pecan pie and spices. It was artfully compiled by Stuart Morrison using single malts from eight Speyside distilleries in Diageo’s enviable portfolio including fruity Knockando salty Inchgower and the relatively unknown and somewhat grassy Roseisle. Although this super smooth dram was designed for mixing – think a Whisky Highball a Whisky Sour or a Speyside take on an Old Fashioned – it can be sipped neat with many espousing that it more than rivals classic Speyside Single Malts that cost considerably more.
Copper Dog was created by Piers Adam the nightclub bar and restaurant entrepreneur behind celebrity haunts Mahiki in London and The Craigellachie Hotel in Speyside. This wonderful whisky is named after the ‘farm to fork’ pub at the latter which had taken its name from a small piece of copper tubing on a chain. This device known as the copper dog could be dipped into a whisky barrel and then concealed within a trouser leg allowing the contents to be smuggled out of the warehouse past the ever-vigilant eyes of customs and excise officials. As such this is a modern whisky that remembers the romance legends and tomfoolery of its past.
