95 points, “Aromas of plums, dried flowers and black cherries follow through to a full body with layers of ripe tannins that are chewy, yet polished and savoury. Flavourful and delicious.” – James Suckling

94 points, “The Cortonesi 2016 Brunello di Montalcino La Mannella shows dark fruit with dried cherry, blackcurrant and plum. On a second wave of aromas, you encounter softer spice with toasted almond, tilled earth and grilled herb. This is a classic expression of the crisp but sunny 2016 vintage with an open and food-friendly personality. There is a playful touch of sweet cherry on the close.” – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

Tommaso Cortonesi’s grandfather bought La Mannella in the 1970s. The 56-hectare estate boasts eight that produce Brunello di Montalcino. Most of the vineyards are located around the winery at La Mannella, just north of Montalcino, but they also have vineyards near Castelnuovo dell’Abate. Until the 1990s, they blended the grapes into one wine, but realising they had very different characters, they separated them out, calling them Poggiarelli and La Mannella.

2016 was one of the most highly rated vintages ever for the Brunello di Montalcino, eclipsing even the monumental 2015s. So, wines like La Mannella 2016 are intriguing prospects. This silky-smooth Sangiovese spends three years in Slavonian oak, and because it comes from one of the coolest areas in the appellation, it displays stunning aromatics, slow-ripened complexity and wonderful degree of freshness. With very little of the 2016s around, this great value Brunello di Montalcino is an absolute steal for fans of the region.
