We don’t know why this is called ‘Letras Minúsculas’ (meaning ‘lowercase letters’ in Spanish) because it’s so good all we want to do is shout about it in BOLD BLOCK CAPITALS.
Based in Rioja Alavesa Creaciones Exeo is the kind of new wave producer that we find super exciting. Stepping back from the region’s traditions and heavy reliance on oak influence they create fresher wines that put us in the mood for summer. And we’re not alone in our love of this terroir-driven producer. Tim Atkin MW named Creaciones Exeo’s Carlos Fernández his Grower of the Year in his 2021 Rioja Report.
This cherry-coloured red is made predominantly from Tempranillo grapes sourced from the Las Torcas plot. That was the first vineyard owned by Creaciones Exeo making Letras Minúsculas a very personal wine. The rest of the blend comprises Grenache and Graciano and it was aged in two-year-old French oak for eight months. Pull the cork to discover an intense whack of red fruit from the Grenache darker liquorice notes from the Tempranillo and a refreshing acidity from the Graciano. It tastes like hipster Beaujolais meets modern Spain. Fruity and punchy with only subtle oakiness Letras Minúsculas is a Rioja for a new generation. And we can’t wait to pair it with barbeques burgers pizza tomato-based pasta and tapas.
