Noix de la Saint Jean is a walnut liqueur from the Forcalquier distillery in Haute Provence where the drink is traditionally enjoyed as an aperitif. Produced from the finest Dauphine green walnuts picked on or before St. Jean's day (24th June) the walnuts are harvested at optimum maturity while still unripe. The St. Jean in question is known to us as John the Baptist. To enhance the flavour of the nuts the Distilleries et Domaines de Provence recipe combines them with nutmeg cinnamon and cloves; subtle additions which give this aperitif its delicious spicy fruity flavours. Noix de la St Jean is suggested to partner a melon starter or can be drunk instead of Port or Banyuls with chocolate or nut-based desserts along with cheese.
