Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge is from 32 acres of 40-year-old vines, on deeper clay/limestone soils, from the lieux dits of Les Pierres and Le Poirier du Clos. The grapes are mostly destemmed and fermented in vat, with indigenous yeasts, without crushing or SO2 before spending 12 months in 10% new oak casks and bottled without fining or filtration.
Joseph Colin aims for crunchy reds and they’re wonderfully refreshing gently chilled straight out of the cellar. This sophisticated little number has autumnal notes of a fallen leaves in a forest, oven-baked plum crumble, red cherry, strawberry sorbet and tangy raspberries. It pairs perfectly with lighter meals, equally well with heavier meals such as Christmas dinner, when you really need something to cut through all that richness.
Saint Aubin used to be off the beaten track, but now it’s fast-becoming hot property in Burgundy. Here you’ll find Joseph Colin, son of Marc Colin who was one of the early pioneers in this area. In 2016 Joseph left the family business to branch out on his own, taking with him some plots in incredible locations including Chassagne-Montrachet. 2017 was his first full vintage and with a wealth of experience and confidence, he looks like one of Burgundy’s bright young sparks to watch. But don’t just take our word for it, Wine Advocate “encourage readers to acquaint themselves with his wines” too.
