93 points, “Light lemon and lime. A little touch of banana to the nose which is notably punchier than the Puligny. Then it calms down and becomes flintier. A little youthful bitterness here as the white fruit otherwise takes over. Much more Blagny than Meursault. Fine crunchy finish.” – Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

A Premier Cru with an unusual history. Up to the late 1990s this vineyard was dedicated to Pinot Noir, until the Leflaives regrafted it with Chardonnay. Every year since then, this Meursault 1er Cru Sous le Dos d’Ane has gone from strength to strength displaying more and more minerality and gravitas.

Organic, biodynamic and iconic, Domaine Leflaive is the doyen of Puligny-Montrachet producing “the kind of wine that should be delivered by Grace Kelly” according to the Wall Street Journal. The attention to detail invested in these Chardonnays “set standards for white Burgundy that few other estates can approach”, and in the words of Wine Advocate: “If you do not like Leflaive’s wines, then you do not like white Burgundy.”

2020 was a vintage of consistently high-quality white wines in Burgundy, reminiscent of the wonderful 2017s. The Chardonnay has such perfect balance, so we recommend getting all over this vintage before everything gets snapped up.

With twelve months in cask and six in tank, this is drinking elegantly now but will reward those with the willpower to cellar. Laced with delicate oak, toasted hazelnuts, buttery pastry, flinty beach pebbles, slate, apricots, peach, crisp pear, tangy lime sorbet and lemon peel, it makes a stupendous match to hot salmon with hollandaise, lobster ravioli with butter, tarts, quiches and creamy pies.
