The Gauldrons joins Big Peat (Islay) The Epicurean (Lowlands) Scallywag (Speyside) Rock Oyster (Islands) and Timorous Beastie (Highlands) in Douglas Laing’s “Remarkable Regional Malts” range and like its predecessors it more than lives up to that moniker.

This stunning Blended Malt Scotch Whisky explores the too often overlooked region of Campbeltown. Once home to some thirty distilleries Campbeltown was a major player in the world of whisky. However most of them have long since gone out of business and now only a handful remain (Springbank Glengyle and Glen Scotia). The experts at Douglas Laing & Co. have married together the finest Campbeltown Malts to create The Gauldrons. The name meaning “Bay of Storms” pays homage to the dark and tumultuous coves on the region’s west shores.

Just like a storm at sea The Gauldrons sets the pulse racing and causes the hair on the back of your neck to stand up. Whirling with salty sea spray gentle smoke seaweed peat buttery shortbread honey-roasted granola cinnamon buns salted caramel crème brûlée topping olive brine and wood spices. Bottled without colouring of chill filtration this is a deep dive into Scotland’s smallest whisky-producing region.

Douglas Laing & Co. was founded in 1948 by a former RAF pilot Fred Douglas Laing. Initially blenders the company began bottling Single Malt in 1999 and rapidly built an enviable reputation as one of Scotland’s finest independent bottlers. They returned to the blending business as well and are now famed for their much-loved Big Peat Scallywag Timorous Beastie The Gauldrons and many more. Their ethos is to provide the whisky lover with Scotch as the distiller intended i.e. as close to sampling a dram straight from the cask as possible. Following apprenticeships at Whyte & Mackay and White Horse Distillers Fred Hamilton Laing took over the family business and has now passed the baton to his daughter Cara Laing. The company has now also entered the distillation game purchasing Strathearn Distillery and with another Clutha in the pipeline. These are exciting times to get into the delicious world of Douglas Laing & Co..
