95 points “Excellent stuff. What a good use of the warm climate fruit of Eastern Mendoza. This is mellow but ripe warm but fresh not too rich with a juicy mix of red plum ripe apple and ripe cranberry fruit. Fabulous easy-going Sunday lunch wine. Let's have more like this.” – Oz Clarke
If you think that Argentine reds are all made from Malbec think again. Cara Sucia Cepas Tradicionales is a quite frankly crazy blend of Bonarda Syrah Sangiovese Cardinale Beiquiñol Barbera and Buonamico.
This unusual mixture of grapes comes from Durigutti’s old-vine plot in Rivadavia and it’s all co-fermented together. Juicy and fruity with dark plum cherry earth peppermint and bright acidity this red has a joyful summery character that we’re going to enjoy throughout barbeque season and into autumn’s comfort food.
Cara Sucia means “dirty face” inspired by the winemaking brothers who grew up on these dusty vineyards. But there’s nothing dirty about their wine. It’s aged in concrete eggs so there’s no oak to mask the vibrant fruit and it’s bottled without filtering or fining making it vegan-friendly.
Durigutti is a family winery set up by two strapping brothers Héctor and Pablo who are Mendoza born and bred. Located in the heart to Lujan de Cuyo seen by many as Argentina’s finest winemaking area they produce Argentine classics like Malbec and Torrontes but also some of the country’s most innovative and thrilling wines.
