Jan-Leonard Moortgat and his wife established Brouwerij Duvel Moortgat in 1871. At the time, there were more than 3,000 breweries in Belgium. Learning by trial and error, his top-fermented beers became the choice of the Brussels bourgeoisie. While many of those Belgian breweries have fallen by the wayside, Duvel has remained strong. And today it’s run by the fourth generation of the Flemish family and their beers are exported to more than 60 countries around the globe. Scots will be pleased to know that the beer is made using a unique yeast strain that stems from an original culture of Scottish yeast that the Moortgat family bought while on a business trip. The name, ‘Duvel’, comes from the word for ‘devil’ in Brabantian, Ghent and Antwerp dialect. And it really is devilishly good.
