In a year that Jancis Robinson described as “particularly strong for both colours of Hermitage” Marcel Guigal delivered a gorgeous Crozes-Hermitage Blanc 2017. Crisp racy and sleek it’s a blend of Marsanne and Roussanne with elegant honeysuckle orange blossom dried apricot tangy citrus and ripe peach and melon notes. There’s also a delightful bitterness of almonds fennel and sea salt on the finish. Serve alongside spaghetti alle vongole lemon sole crumbly cheeses roasted vegetables roast chicken or fishcakes with tartar sauce.
E. Guigal is a simply legendary winery which has passed from founder Etienne to his son Marcel and now on to his grandson Philippe. According to Robert Parker it’s “a qualitative locomotive that has brought attention to the Rhône Valley raising the quality bar for the entire region.” And Parker has backed this up by awarding it more perfect 100-point scores than any other producer on the planet. Although famed for their Northern Rhône reds the whites are not to be missed either.
