The gourmets at BBC Good Food rate this Straight Rye as five-star whiskey and it thoroughly deserves that high rank. Created with lots of rye, a little malted barley and no corn whatsoever, it’s almost as caramel-packed and chewy as a Tunnock’s bar. Once you’ve got your teeth into it, you’ll discover rich butterscotch, red cherry, baking spices, dill, dried mint, prunes, blackberry jam, polished oak and that big hit of pepper so adored in this style. A bit of a contradiction because this is completely unique, but also one of the classic rye whiskies.

As the founding father of the Bourbon industry Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor Jr. left an indelible legacy. A ‘Colonel’ in the Kentucky sense much like Colonel Sanders, his dedication to distilling began at the close of the Civil War when he purchased O.F C. Distillery. There he developed innovative techniques that are still in use today. He was also the driving force behind the ‘Bottled-in-Bond Act’ (still noted on the label) which was the first law put in place to protect consumers in America. Now the whiskey that bears his name is made by hand at Buffalo Trace Distillery who are also responsible for Pappy Van Winkle, Eagle Rare Blanton’s, George T. Stagg, W.L. Weller and many more. However, this small-batch whiskey has been aged inside century-old warehouses constructed by E.H. Taylor Jr. back in the day. Barrels are evaluated and selected to create a perfect blend of distinctive character that is like no other.
