If this sweet Riesling was German it’s sweetness would be classified around a Beerenauslese level and it would probably cost substantially more.
Crafted using hand-selected bunches of super-ripe Riesling grapes grown at Escarpment’s Te Muna Road site the Hinemoa Riesling is one of our all-time favourite dessert wines. This New Zealand producer is fast developing a cult following among fine wine connoisseurs and it’s not hard to see why when you pour this beauty. Intensely concentrated and almost syrupy in its lusciousness but the classic Riesling acidity keeps everything fresh and perfectly in check. To taste this late harvest Riesling reminds us of caramelised oranges yuzu mango honey boiled sweets lemon barley water and just the slightest whiff of pulling into a petrol station. Consider pairing with a cheeseboard fruit-based desserts particularly citrusy puddings or maybe even dumplings with a spicy dipping sauce.
Owned by Larry and Sue McKenna and Robert and Mem Kirby Escarpment takes its name from the limestone ridge that runs through Burgundy. Martinborough has always displayed a certain Burgundian elegance with New Zealand wine expert Sam Kim saying that this estate’s wines “could be mistaken for a top-flight Burgundy”. Raymond Chan who sadly passed away in 2019 was one of New Zealand’s most respected wine critics. He was always a huge fan of Escarpment awarding it Winery of the Year in 2015.
