Although almost always completely dry Dolcetto means “little sweet one”. The name is thought to come from a Piedmontese word referring to the rolling hills where the grape is grown and the relatively soft acidity. However our advice is not to let that name lull you into a false sense of security with this one. G.D. Vajra’s 2018 is big punchy youthful and surprisingly dark for a Dolcetto d’Alba – think dried olives plums and black cherries. With lots to chew on in this vibrant and summery red consider pairing with balsamic glazes fresh pasta with simple tomato sauces beetroot risotto spiced red cabbage barbequed vegetable kebabs duck with cherry sauce or truffle-topped crostini.
Despite being in Italy’s top echelon of producers the Vajra family remains quiet and endearingly humble but their intense passion and skill shine in every drop they make. Their wines sit perfectly between the traditional and the modern they’re all vegan friendly and their vineyards have been farmed organically since 1971. While many relegate Dolcetto d’Alba to lesser sites in favour of Nebbiolo G.D. Vajra love theirs very much and therefore choose the finest blocks for it.
