2016 was one of the greatest Barolo vintages of modern times with Italian wine expert Antonio Galloni describing it as “a vintage full of truly spectacular breath-taking wines that captures all the pedigrees that Nebbiolo and Barolo are capable of.” That makes Gaja’s Dagromis Barolo which hails from the two incredible terroirs of Serralunga and La Morra a must-try. And this handy half bottle is a great way to experience it.
Dagromis is named after the Gromis family who Gaja acquired the vineyards from back in 1995. In 2016 it’s an elegant and harmonious wine full of ageing potential. Expect fragrant notes of violet rose petal and white pepper followed by cherry wild strawberry and forest floor flavours tinged with blood orange seared grapefruit balsamic and mossy bark. An incredible half bottle to pull out of the rack for roasts tomato-based pasta casseroles wild mushrooms game or even pizza.
Although this family estate was established in the 1850s it wasn’t until Angelo Gaja took over in 1970 that Gaja was pushed through into the vanguard of Italian wine. Although the Super Tuscans hog much of spotlight this man is often described as having single-handedly dragged Italian wine into the modern age. Not content with introducing revolutionary modern techniques and non-indigenous grape varieties to his Piedmont vineyards propelling them into the position of benchmark for the region he has also branched out to Tuscany with dramatic effect. A rebel a perfectionist and an incredible winemaker when it comes to the great man we think Robert Parker puts it best: “A genius for sure Angelo Gaja cannot be faulted for what he puts in the bottle.”
