The 40 Year Old Cumulative Time is part of Glenfiddich’s exquisite Time Re:Imagined range and it’s another timeless classic. This Speyside distillery is so popular that only 0.01% of their stocks ever reach 30 years of age. So, minuscule amounts must reach forty, making this release the rarest of the rare.
The idea behind the expression is that it captures the layers that accumulate over time. Rather like the strata of rock that build up over many years in a valley, Cumulative Time has captured four decades of history within its liquid layers. This whisky was crafted using a technique called ‘remnant vatting’ – a process in which Glenfiddich’s Malt Master carries one batch over, time and again, before marrying it with the casks selected for each subsequent release. This gives the release the character of the past releases and stacks layer upon layer of flavour over 40 years. Cask after cask, season after season, year after year, it builds luxurious strata of Black Forest gateau, Christmas cake, roasted coffee, new leather boots, apple crumble studded with cloves, sticky Medjool dates, wood smoke and peat. Definitely a Scotch to spend some quality time with.
Cumulative Time has been filled into a handsome contemporary decanter, which harks back to the iconic triangular bottle, known as the ‘tround’. The tround was designed in the 1950s by Hans Schleger, a man who updated London Transport’s famous roundel and produced some of the most famous public information posters during World War II. The crystal bottle has then been slipped into a bespoke jesmonite (a composite material that consists of a gypsum-based material and acrylic resin) container. Dramatic cuts and grooves reveal a stone-like material flecked with colours that emulate the green glass that houses Glenfiddich’s 12 Year Old and the shining copper of their stills. Like the liquid within, each jesmonite box is completely unique.
Glenfiddich was founded by William Grant in 1887 and today represents the world’s most awarded single malt Scotch. Still managed by William’s descendants and still using the same water source, Glenfiddich continue to evolve, improve and innovate and the whiskies released have never been better.
