The Distillers Edition release of Glenkinchie has been finished in Amontillado Sherry casks, imparting additional weight and richness, plus lots of nuttiness. It initially presents floral and malty nuances on the nose, which are backed up with intense hazelnut, spice, vanilla, fresh red grapes, dates, granola and orange peel aromas. Soft, delicate and luscious on the palate, subtle oak notes interplay with suggestions of almond biscotti, walnut baklava, cinnamon, Abernethy biscuits and spiced apple crumble. Round and balanced on the finish, this is a highly attractive and dangerously drinkable dram.
Founded in 1825 on the outskirts of Edinburgh by John and George Rate, Glenkinchie represents one of only a handful of distilleries in the Lowland region. It’s thought that it was originally known as the Milton Distillery, before being renamed in the 1837, with ‘Kinchie’ being a corruption of De Quincy – the name of the original landowners. Glenkinchie is a distillery that would change the face of Scotch forever, because it was one of the five Lowland distillers that would form Scottish Malt Distillers Ltd, which would then merge with Distillers Company Ltd and eventually become Diageo as we know it today. The majority of Glenkinchie’s spirit was used for world famous blends such as Haig, Dimple, Dewar’s and Johnnie Walker, but in the late 1980s it became one of Diageo’s Classic Malts, rocketing it into the limelight. Renowned for its soft, approachable style and grassy, appley and nutty character, Glenkinchie is one we always recommend for those new to the world of Scotch.
