GLENTURRET 30 Year Old 2020 Maiden Release Single Malt Scotch Whisky

The excitement surrounding Glenturret exploded in 2019 when the distillery was purchased by a joint venture led by the French luxury lifestyle company The Lalique Group who have been working with Macallan for many years. A year later Glenturret launched a new range of whiskies – the ‘2020 Maiden Releases’ – created by the legendary Bob Dalgarno who spent 30 years at Macallan. That appointment piqued the curiosity of Scotch aficionados and collectors everywhere making Glenturret very hot property indeed…
Only 750 bottles of this extremely scarce whisky were released. We managed to secure just three of them. The Glenturret 30 Year Old 2020 is a meeting of the very new and the very old. When the new owners took over they filled some of the precious 30-year-old spirit into new European oak Sherry casks where they matured it for a further year. This was then blended with some of the rare 30-year-old spirit that had spent its three decades in the original wood. The result is a luxurious combination of delicate tropical fruit sorbet crunchy green apple juicy pear prunes in Armagnac fruitcake vanilla pod and oaky spices. And don’t even get us started on that gorgeous Lalique decanter; it’s a piece of glass art that we’ll keep hold of long after the whisky has been consumed.
Glenturret upholds a claim to be the “oldest working distillery in Scotland” with an ancient rental document suggesting that whisky was being made here as early as 1763 although presumably illicitly. Sitting on the bank of the River Turret at Crieff Glenturret certainly has a long and intriguing history having changed hands name and site on numerous occasions and having been repeatedly opened and closed and then reopened again. Most will know its location as home to one of Scotland’s premier tourist attractions the Famous Grouse Experience as it’s an important component of that world-famous blend. Or if you have very niche interests you may possibly be aware of Glenturret because of its record-breaking mouser a killer cat by the name of Towser. But forget the ancient history and weird footnotes it’s Glenturret’s new ownership that means it needs to be firmly on the radar of any Scotch lover.
