96 points “This is really beautifully rich and opulent with aromas of ripe fruit caramel and chocolate brioche. Some earth too. Medium-to full-bodied with soft integrated tannins that give a cashmere mouth feel. It’s fresh and very long with gorgeous texture and a delicious finish.” – James Suckling

94 points “The 2019 IDDA rosso has taken a big step forward in quality. The tannins are so much more refined. According to Gaia Gaja they increased the percentage of whole bunches used in the fermentation from 30% to 50%. At the moment creamy new oak and soft vanilla dominate but it is still very young. Cream and ripe cherry fruit integrate softly on palate with herb and medicinal notes adding intrigue.” – Decanter

IDDA Etna Rosso is an exciting new joint venture between Angelo Gaja (arguably the greatest producer of Barbaresco and one of the most famous names in Italian wine) and Alberto Graci (an ex-banker from Milan who has been making wine in Sicily for almost 20 years). Together this dynamic duo owns 21 hectares of vineyards in the villages of Belpasso and Biancavilla on Europe’s most active volcano Mount Etna.

Angelo Gaja was introduced to Etna by the legendary oenologist Giacomo Tachis back in the 1990s and he has been intrigued to make wine there ever since. He met Alberto Graci in 2015 and their partnership started the following year. The first vintages have been made at Graci’s winery in Passopisciaro but there are plans for a dedicated winery to be built at Belpasso and to be used from the 2022 harvest onwards.

IDDA means “she” in Sicilian dialect and it’s what the locals call Etna. The IDDA Etna Rosso is made from Nerello Mascalese (sometimes with a splash of Nerello Cappuccio). The wines from this region are very much en vogue at present and the Gaja name always garners much attention so we fully expect the price to rise rapidly for future vintages. Vinified in concrete vats before being aged in oak for 24 months IDDA Etna Rosso has a sleek elegance light touch and crunchy acidity that will inevitably draw comparison to the finest Pinot Noir from Burgundy. Summer berries mingle with cherry blood orange wild herbs marzipan vine tomato smoky tar chocolate and liquorice. This would make an exquisite gift for any fine wine collector.
