“It’s all about accepting life’s contrasts and celebrating these differences.” – Pieter ‘Bubbles’ Ferreira

Part of Graham Beck’s Artisan Collection Yin & Yang is a limited-edition duo of sparkling wines available to buy exclusively as a pair. These rare wines are mirror images of each other two complementary forces creating one dynamic system. Only 2 000 boxes were made…

Yin is a blush-coloured blend of 60% Pinot Noir from Durbanville and 40% Chardonnay half of which came from Robertson and was fermented in stainless steel with the remainder coming from Stellenbosch and having been barrel fermented. It was matured on the lees (the spent yeast that gives the finest sparkling wines their nutty creamy and bready character) for a staggering five years which is two years longer than Vintage Champagne requires by law. With a gorgeous salmon-pink hue it buzzes with red berry sorbet blackcurrants and savoury allspice.

Yang is the opposite. The grapes come from the same areas and are vinified in the same way but they are blended to the reverse ratio: 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir. The result is a vibrant mix of ripe citrus peel and sun-kissed apricot all wrapped up in silk.

Together they’re a unique expression of the 2016 vintage (rated as ‘Outstanding’ by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate for South Africa). We recommend opening them side by side because they complete each other creating a truly magical experience.

Graham Beck was one of South Africa’s richest men. The mining tycoon stud farmer entrepreneur and philanthropist bought a farm just outside the Western Cape town of Robertson in 1983 and soon added winemaker to his already impressive curriculum vitae. Concentrating on Méthode Cap Classique (the name given to South African wine made using the same technique as Champagne) he created one of the country’s first sparkling wine brands. Before he sadly passed away in 2010 Graham Beck saw his wines sipped by the great and good having been chosen to celebrate the inauguration of Nelson Mandela in 1994 and the presidential win of Barack Obama in 2009. The company is now run by the adorably nicknamed Pieter ‘Bubbles’ Ferreira and is considered one of the world’s finest sparkling wine producers.
