Louis-Alexandre Marnier Lapostolle was a man with a plan – to create a liqueur so grand that it would captivate the world for generations. In 1880, he combined the finest Cognac with bitter oranges from the Caribbean called Citrus Bigaradia. These rare, exotic, green oranges are dried in the hot sun, locking in the most luxurious aromas and flavours. He named his new spirit Curaçao, but his good friend César Ritz, the founder of the eponymous hotel, suggested that Grand Marnier would be “a grand name for a grand liqueur”. Changing the bottle shape to one inspired by the silhouette of the traditional Cognac stills, Louis-Alexandre’s invention became the belle of La Belle Époque and is still loved to this very day.
