In 1999 after realising the potential for English Sparkling Wine Ian Kellett bought Hambledon Vineyard and began studying oenology at Plumpton College in Sussex. After few years of research and tests over the best combinations of vine clones and rootstocks the vineyard was converted into a company in 2010. Nowadays Hambledon is comprised of more than 200 acres of vineyards planted with Chardonnay Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. In pursuing the vision to produce the best multi-vintage sparkling wine in England the estate hired Herve Jestin as head winemaker and it built the only gravity-fed winery in the country.
The Hambledon Première Cuvée is the estate’s prestige release and is a classic blend of 67% Chardonnay 22% Pinot Meunier and 11% Pinot Noir. Rich and warm notes of orange chamomile and hazelnuts accompany richer notes of baked apples dried apricots and brioche. The finish shows undertones of vanilla and toffee ending with a vivid orangey tang. Very dry long and immensely complex this wine accompanies perfectly lobster sushi or sole.
