When you’re searching for a gift with a touch of class for the red wine lover look no further than this collection curated by our expert Wine Buyer.

Tucked inside that chic Harvey Nichols box are three of the finest Old World wines anyone could hope to receive. Two rich reds and a critically acclaimed Port await the lucky recipient…

The selection kicks off in style with what is unofficially the third wine of Château Lafite Rothschild. Pauillac Réserve Spéciale was created by Domaine Barons de Rothschild using grapes from the younger vines at the legendary First Growth and neighbouring Château Duhart-Milon (which at one time in its history produced the second wine of Château Lafite Rothschild). This refined concentrated and accessible Bordeaux offers sophisticated notes of blackberry coulis crème de cassis autumn leaves tobacco spice cedar and pencil lead. 2016 has been lauded as the greatest vintage in Pauillac since the back-to-back phenomena of 2009 and 2010. Combine that with the First Growth know-how possessed by the Rothschild family and this wine becomes an intriguing prospect.

The second wine comes from Spain’s Tinta Pequera. When the Familia Fernández Rivera began making wine in 1975 the only other local winery of note was Vega Sicilia and the region didn’t even have a Denominación de Origen classification yet. But when Robert Parker compared Tinto Pesquera to Château Pétrus the world took notice and it has been an icon of Ribera del Duero ever since. MXI Selección de Barricas is something fresh and exciting from Tinto Pesquera. Created by the new generation using grapes from the highlands of Pesquera it was matured for 14 months in carefully chosen barrels that were toasted to a medium char. Pull the cork to discover blackberry raspberry creamy black cherry yoghurt vanilla and toffee notes combined with rounded tannins and a food-friendly acidity. Treat this as you might a particularly fine Malbec.

And finally there’s an intense Vintage Port from Quinta de la Rosa who make our very own Harvey Nichols Late Bottled Vintage and 10 Year Old Tawny. Although only released it has already received a huge score of 94 points from the experts at Wine Enthusiast. This traditional foot-trodden Port is the jewel in the revered estate’s crown. It can be sipped young by those who prefer a fresh and mineral style or it can be aged for generations by those who like their Port more developed. Described by Decanter Magazine as offering “excellent value” this classic Port is brimming with rose petals black grape skin graphite red plum crumble dark chocolate brambles and fresh raspberries. However if stored carefully Quinta de la Rosa’s Vintage Port 2019 will start to develop more jammy and dried fruit flavours spice earthiness and notes of caramel over the coming decades. Although wonderful now it looks set to become something truly magnificent.

The perfect present for someone who is ageing like a fine wine.
