Saint-Estèphe is the most northern of Médoc’s major communes and is often overshadowed by Château Lafite Rothschild and the other big players in Pauillac which lie just beyond its southern border. The good news is that this means exceptional value for money for the savvy Bordeaux drinker. Rich powerful and tannic the wines of Saint-Estèphe are built to last and should not be consumed too young. Luckily we’ve chosen wines from three of the region’s most prestigious châteaux that are now drinking gloriously…

Château Montrose is “Bordeaux’s archetypal St-Estèphe” (Jancis Robinson) so it was only right to include one of their exquisite reds. Once only available to employees at the winery it’s wonderful that we can now give you the opportunity to taste Le Saint-Estèphe de Montrose. We adore the smoky note in this vintage. Joining that we have a wine from a fabulous location. Drive just past Château Lafite Rothschild and tucked in next to Château Cos d’Estournel you’ll find Château Cos Labory. Often overlooked because of its famous neighbours this Saint-Estèphe is oaky sweetly spiced packed with dark fruits – black cherries blueberries blackberries and blackcurrants – and has minty eucalyptus and pencil lead notes that will appeal to Rhône fans as well as Bordeaux drinkers. And rounding out the bunch comes Château Calon Ségur’s Le Marquis de Calon-Ségur 2016. Awarded 93 points by respected critic Antonio Galloni this wine is “gorgeous” with a “succulent racy personality.” His colleague and fellow expert Neal Martin called it: “A deeply impressive second wine from Calon-Ségur that should give a decade of drinking pleasure.” So this is a great gift for someone who likes to cellar their wine for a while. It’s a dark and highly aromatic red whose notes of balsamic black cherry blackberry earthy truffles and barbeque coals are screaming out for anything chargrilled griddle-panned or roasted. Cheers to Saint-Estèphe.
