West Coast Wonders contains wines from two legendary American winemakers Joseph Phelps and Bob Lindquist and probably the most summery Pinot Noir imaginable. Perfect for anyone who is California dreamin’.
First up is the limited-edition Harvey Nichols Premium Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. Many of the grapes that go into it are declassified from Joseph Phelps’ Insignia 2017 – a wine that retails for £250 a bottle and was awarded 96 points by Decanter Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate James Suckling and Jeb Dunnuck. So it’s something very special indeed. Next there’s the sun-kissed “Y” Block Chardonnay from Qupé. Made in the same winery as Au Bon Climat it’s a masterclass in cool-climate Californian Chardonnay. Qupé was established in Santa Barbara County by Bob Lindquist. In 2015 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Rhone Rangers organisation (a group of American winemakers who promote the Rhône Valley grape varieties). Following in the footsteps of Randall Grahm of Bonny Doon and Bob Haas of Tablas Creek he is only the third to receive this award showing what high esteem he is held in. And finally there’s the La Crema’s Pinot Noir from the wild and windswept vineyards of Monterey. The grapes are picked at night to keep it crunchy and fresh so this one has barbeque season written all over it.
