Harveys V.O.R.S. (meaning ‘Vinum Optimum Rare Signatum’ but often expressed in English as ‘Very Old Rare Sherries’) are a series of Sherries that are certified by the Consejo Regulador de la Denominacion de Origin to be more than 30 years of age. When you consider how much a 30-year-old Scotch would cost or the fact that an X.O. Cognac might only be six years of age it becomes obvious that these Sherries offer remarkable value for money. Although wonderful all year round we particularly love sipping them over the Christmas season and they make a wonderful 30th anniversary presents or a cheeky gift for that ‘very old rare’ person in your life!

The 30 Year Old V.O.R.S. Palo Cortado Blend Medium Sherry was drawn from a solera founded in 1906. Shortlisted for the Champion of Champions at the International Wine Challenge 2016 it was just pipped to the top prize by its Amontillado counterpart but the Palo Cortado remains our Wine Buyer’s favourite. Jancis Robinson agrees saying that this is “the wine style that seems most often favoured by Sherry aficionados” and describing it as “a real reviver and a wine that you could serve at any time of the day.”

A lot drier than the Amontillado but a little sweeter than most Palo Cortado it’s made using 98% Palomino and just a 2% dash of Pedro Ximénez. Glowing amber this deep and rich wine has aromas of citrus sandalwood roasted hazelnuts woody perfume brown sugar marzipan sultanas and polishing wax. On the perfectly balanced palate there’s more of the same plus orange peel caramelised sugar oak fruitcake toasted nuts Earl Grey tea and treacle toffee. Serve lightly chilled alongside salted nuts hard cheese pâté terrine cured meats ramen or wild mushrooms on toast.

Harveys is a global icon of Sherry. The world-famous company was established on Denmark Street in Bristol in 1796 by the merchant William Perry. During the 19th Century it became one of the largest importers of fortified wine from the Bay of Cadiz to the port in the West Country. In 1882 John Harvey II and his brother Edward created Harveys Bristol Cream using a meticulous blend of Fino Oloroso Amontillado and Pedro Ximénez matured in American oak casks using the traditional system of soleras and criaderas. A legend was born and the company hasn’t stopped innovating or seeking out the best vineyards and bodegas in Spain’s Jerez region since. Today their Sherry is crafted by the super-experienced Manuel José Valcárcel who has been the Harveys Master Blender for more than two decades.
